Objectives

Exchange of ideas. Extract information directly or indirectly. Record persons experiences attitudes social background motivations tensions.
Collect subjective and objective data

Principles

Interview should be open minded. Proper introduction. Good good rapo with interview. But hymen argues that it should not be over done because it hinders good interaction and getting proper information. Proper timing and empathy is needed to guide the interview. Types

Same questions for all.
Fully structured when alternatives are fixed. A b c or none of these
Open ended. Unstructured.
Semi-structured their responses are partially structured

Features.

Rigid and less flexibility. Researcher can't change the question much. Lease out nuances and limits the choices of respondent.
Advantage of being fast analysis and standardized. Allows comparative study.

Open ended questions

In depth exploration. Guide the interview in any direction. Unlimited choice for the respondent. Accurate description.
Not quantifiable and comparable. Responses may be vague and confusing.

Unstructured

questions are asked randomly. Very high flexibility. Interview or should be an expert.
Advantages. Flexibility. Indirect information can be extracted easily. find out hidden aspects of social structure. Accurate description
Disadvantages. Cannot be comparable. Not quantifiable. Creates a relevant data and time consuming and costly.

Semi structured.

Can be focused. In-depth or repeated interview.
Focused interview. On particular event like flood famine.

selection. People who have been involved in that particular situation. Focus mainly on that event.

In-depth interview.

Follow social psychology. believe that human personality is hidden in the subconscious. Get relevant data pertaining to personality. Requires an expert and new ethnography. It can be supplemented by rapid fire interview as per kingsley.

Repeated interview

Study responses over time. At different intervals. Expensive in time and cost.

Advantages of interview method. First collection of data. Cheaper. Can be quantified and compared. Flexibility to the researcher. Spread over a sample so so can be e e eliminating error. People are willing to talk.

Disadvantages. Can become very subjective at times. Researchers have to work hard. Respondents may be lying or not honest. Clear communication necessary between interviewer and respondent therefore researcher from other culture finds it difficult.
